Born in London, she has degrees from the University of Bristol and Royal Holloway, University of London, and a History DPhil from Wadham College, University of Oxford. Her doctoral thesis Educated expectations: graduate mothers and their work in the long 1950s explored women’s lives and work in post-war Britain.
Her fiction is sometimes inspired by the letters and diaries from across the centuries found in archival collections, and by the cities and rural landscapes where she’s lived and worked. She writes to try to make sense of the world, to explore ideas, make connections between them, and to imagine characters and their motivations as they navigate the complexities of life.
When not reading, researching, and writing, she can be found wandering around art galleries and museums, walking in the countryside with her dog, or pottering amongst the roses in her garden.
